Author Alex Wheatle was spotted in Ruislip High School on January 11, 2013 speaking to young people about his time growing up in care and how his experiences helped shape his first book, Brixton Rock.

Ruislip youngsters were treated to Wheatle’s animated and engaging tales of life in Brixton, the first book he picked up to read, his uncomfortably time in prison and what happened during the Brixton riots in the early 1980s. Wheatle, who was also known by the DJ name Yardman Irie dropped a few lyrical lines to his students from his memorable track Uprising. His blend of colourful descriptions, sights and sounds of the people who came into his life kept youngsters intrigued.

Head teacher Martina Lecky commented that it is always a great pleasure to have Wheatle visit the school to share his life story and show young people that you can always achieve despite your hardships.
